Karen Kyriakou

Karen Kyriakou is renowned for her ever-innovative approach to music education. She is in demand as a presenter and workshop facilitator with many of Australia’s leading arts organisations and community music organisations including the MSO, Musica Viva, ANAM and The Melbourne Recital Centre.
Driven by her special interest in supporting young people to achieve beyond their expectations, Karen is a long-time Artist in Residence in schools for children with diverse needs, including Deaf children. In 2012 Karen was awarded a Churchill Fellowship to travel to the UK to investigate delivering authentic, inclusive musical experiences to Deaf children.
Karen’s professional learning sessions for teachers develop approaches of inclusivity in the different settings faced by classroom and instrumental music teachers; the music classroom, ensembles, group and private lessons.
As the writer and presenter of the ‘Jams for Juniors’ program run by the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, Karen engages young children and their families as they play along with the musicians of the orchestra, exploring symphonic works together. Jams for Juniors can be access both live and online.
In 2018, Karen released her first book Strings Together, containing 20 inclusive and adaptable aural lessons for the string classroom or ensemble. Band Together (for brass, woodwind and percussion) is due for release later in 2021.
A staunch advocate of lifelong learning, Karen teaches from early learning to tertiary levels and presents at industry conferences, championing creative music making and inclusive music education.

In a Piece Publishing
In a Piece Publishing was formed in 2004 by Karen Kyriakou, an educator, facilitator, violinist, and composer/arranger. Based in Melbourne, Australia, her work is underpinned by her passion for music’s unique capacity to unite and inspire.
Karen writes music for school string orchestras pursuing her interest of musicals styles from around the world and sharing these experiences with students. Some of her music is available through Alfred Music (USA), and of course here at the IAPP Shop. IAPP is committed to creating high quality resources for both teachers and students, and is the process of developing a series of Teacher Resource books; Strings Together was released in 2018, and Band Together (for brass, woodwind & percussion) is due for release later in 2021. |
Consultant
I consult on education programs and projects for arts organisations and ensembles of any size: outreach programs and performances, diverse needs, and sensory performances. I also love working with independent artists who wish to develop their skills working in the community and educational settings.
As a qualified and experienced teacher - BEd(SecMus), MEd(Mus), CF -, I am equiped (and keen) to work along side musicians with their programs to help develop meaningful, engaging and artistic experiences - for both the students and the performer! I want artists and arts organisations who develop educational shows to know what underpins the decisions required to make a show successful - after all, good outcomes are no accident. If you wish to chat about a project or enquire about a consultation, please email me HERE. I am available for both Australian and international consultations via Zoom. |
