The Composer

Karen Kyriakou is a violinist, music educator and composer. She performs in a variety of ensembles, in a diverse range of styles from world music to contemporary theatre.

Her compositions are regularly being performed in schools and also professionally in both theatre groups and the concert stage. Karen teaches at primary and secondary levels in schools and also in her own home studio.

Karen is also involved with Musica Viva In Schools, both as a performer in the Celtic ensemble Ogham Soup, and in the ‘Composer In The Classroom’ program.

Having completed her Bachelor of Music Education at the University of Melbourne in 1993, Karen regularly works as a guest tutor for strings at music camps and gives workshops to students and teachers in composition, improvisation and performance.

She is currently studying for her Masters of Education (Music) at Monash University.

Her tune ‘Cockroach’ won the 2005 Tim Whelan Tune Writing Award and in the same year ‘Cockroach’ came ‘Runner Up’ in the Music Oz World Music category.
