The Composer

The Composer Karen
Kyriakou is a violinist, music educator and composer. She performs in a variety
of ensembles, in a diverse range of styles from world music to contemporary
theatre. Her
compositions are regularly being performed in schools and also professionally in
both theatre groups and the concert stage. Karen teaches at primary and
secondary levels in schools and also in her own home studio. Karen
is also involved with Musica Viva In Schools, both as a performer in the Celtic
ensemble Ogham Soup, and in the ‘Composer In The Classroom’ program. Having
completed her Bachelor of Music Education at the University of Melbourne in
1993, Karen regularly works as a guest tutor for strings at music camps and
gives workshops to students and teachers in composition, improvisation and
performance. She
is currently studying for her Masters of Education (Music) at Monash University. Her
tune ‘Cockroach’ won the 2005 Tim Whelan Tune Writing Award and in the same
year ‘Cockroach’ came ‘Runner Up’ in the Music Oz World Music category. |
